Description

Set of Four Side, or Dining, Chairs, about 1825
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Curly maple, with upholstered slip seats
34 7/8 in. high, 18 3/4 in. wide, 19 7/8 in. deep (overall)
Inscribed (on the underside of each slip seat, variously): II; III; IIII; VIII

This set of four chairs descended with a matching sofa and a pair of footstools. The vendor of this group originally acquired the set from a member of the Thompson family of Wilmington, Delaware, about 2006, and it is thus likely that it is two chairs from the present set of four that are depicted in a photograph deposited in 1984 in the Decorative Arts Photographic Collection at Winterthur, which is located on the outskirts of Wilmington. Based upon the chop marks present on the underside of the slip seats of each chair, these four chairs were originally part of a set of at least eight chairs.
