Although accomplished as a history painter in the highest academic fashion, Ingres’s ultimate contribution to posterity was his portraits, which since the career-crowning retrospective exhibition of his work at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris have been heralded as among the finest ever in the history of art.
